It is widely known that disease and military conflict with Europeans killed many Native Americans. What else, stemming from European contact, led to many Native American deaths? Africans have a relatively high prevalence of sickle-cell anemia. Europeans have a relatively high prevalence of cystic fibrosis. Both traits are genetic (i.e. hereditary) and quite harmful. One would expect them to eventually die out. Why, then, according to Diamond, do Africans and Europeans have these genetic traits? Hoozah for Britain and her institutions! Compare the institutions, especially property rights in land, of the British 13 colonies, French Canada, and Mexico. How might the different institutions have led to different levels of economic success? Galenson, at least in the reading you were assigned, did not specifically address property rights and political liberties in French Canada. Nonetheless, apply Galenson’s arguments regarding political liberties (to non-slaves) and property rights in land to French Canada. Take what we learned about French Canada in lecture and, in the context of Galenson’s arguments, explain why political liberties and property rights in land differed from that of the British 13 colonies. Benny wishes to graph the ethnic composition of European colonies in the new world.
