Abdominoplasty or tummy tuck can help to improve the appearance of the abdominal area. Pregnancy, previous surgery or dramatic weight changes, can cause excess accumulation of fat or skin around the abdomen, which can lead to both physical discomfort and uneasiness about the appearance of the body. The appearance of the abdomen can be changed with a tummy tuck or abdominoplasty to a leaner shape which would fit better into clothes. There are two types of abdominoplasty 1. Full Abdominoplasty – This is when the excess tissue between the umbilicus and the pubic area is removed and the underlying abdominal muscles are tightened. Mini Abdominoplasty – The abdominal muscles are very toned so only the excess tissue is removed. Only excess tissue above the pubic area is removed. The abdominal area above the umbilicus is not tightened.

This operation is performed under general anaesthetic and takes approximately 2
hours. The incision line is made from hip to hip just above the pubic area. The
excess fat and skin is removed and if necessary the muscles of the abdomen will be
tightened. A new site is made for the belly button, scaring is minimal around belly
button. Drains are usually used and are removed before you leave the hospital.

Remove all jewellery (except wedding rings these will be taped). Remove all signs of make-up and nail varnish.

Do not take aspirin, ibuprofen or vitamin E prior to surgery as this may effect blood clotting. Avoid cigarettes and all nicotine products 6 weeks prior to and 6 week after surgery.
After your discharge, you will be given a phone number for the hospital and an
appointment made foe wound check to be done 1 or 2 weeks after your surgery. If
you have any concerns, feel free to call the hospital for advice. You will have a
check up appointment with your surgeon 4 to 6 weeks after your operation.
